About

Women In STEM – Bhutan

The Women in STEM Bhutan Group is a collaborative voluntary initiative by women working in STEM-related fields across various government and non-government organizations with the objective to promote and empower women and girls in STEM.

It was officially launched on 21st April, 2022.

Background

In order to achieve the internationally agreed development goals, including the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals, science and technology are important factors. Moreover, gender equality in science and technology is important as it enables women and girls to participate in contributing towards these goals. However, globally, there is a large disparity of women and girls’ representation in STEM-related fields. UNESCO’s data (2014-2016) shows that only around 30 percent of female students take STEM-related courses in tertiary education. Furthermore, the enrollment of female students in STEM are all less than 10 percent (UNESCO, 2017).
